AN HISTORICAL REFERENCE FROM THE PARISH HISTORIAN
Windows at Calvary
My article in the January, 2012 Cross Reference addressed the Old Rector’s Study Windows and the South Porch Tower Window in the East Wall. Since that issue was distributed, a great deal of interest has been expressed to me regarding the study. The following, therefore, is provided.
The old Rector’s Study has been known variously in recent decades as the Archives and History Room and it is also the room used by the Vestry to count the Sunday morning alms or offerings after the service. Located on the northeast side of the aspe of the Church, it was added after the structure was completed in 1867. While the exact date of the add on has not been determined as yet, the designs in the windows of that room seem to indicate that it was around 1880.
The Rev. Joseph Blount Cheshire, third rector of Calvary, was the first occupant of the study, followed by Calvary’s next six rectors. The final occupant was the ninth rector, the Rev. Bertram Brown, who used it until the Parish House, containing a new rector’s study, was completed around 1923. That study, located in the northeast corner of the downstairs Parish House hall, was in use by rectors for about 35 years until another across the hall was arranged. That study was eliminated during major renovations of the Parish House during the mid 1980's; and the space was used to expand the present Parish Office and provide a larger vesting room just off the Chapel sacristy. At that time, the large, spacious, beautifully windowed room, then known as the Guild Room, was converted into the present Rector’s Study.–TPM
