Calvary’s Christian Social Ministries committee is very active and welcomes participation. We take our responsibilities to the Parish and community seriously and strive to be good stewards of all allocated funds.
Calvary Parish supports Episcopal Relief and Development as well as providing financial assistance and volunteers for several area agencies or organizations:
- Edgecombe Hospice, which provides compassionate care of terminally ill patients and their families.
- Tarboro Community Outreach, which offers a homeless shelter as well as hot meals and a food pantry for those in need.
- VOICE (Volunteers Offering Independent Care for the Elderly), which provides transportation and companionship to lonely elderly citizens, enabling them to remain independent in their own homes.
- Meals on Wheels, which delivers a hot midday meal to homebound persons who need it.
- Home Health Prescription Drug assistance program, which helps indigent home health patients obtain needed medications or medical supplies.
- The Community Enrichment Organization, which provides education, after-school supervised programs, mentoring and guidance to middle school and high school students who have little or no guidance or support in their homes.
- The Family to Family Program of the Community Enrichment Organization, a mentoring program that matches Calvary parishioners with teen mothers who need support, transportation, and guidance with a goal of addressing self-esteem issues and working towards high school graduation.
- Work First, a program of the County Department of Social Services, which provides the social workers with Wal-Mart gift cards to buy interview clothing for clients, or emergency food or diapers to help sustain families until employment can be secured.
- Freedom Hill Clinic, which serves an otherwise underserved population of residents living in poverty, including a large Hispanic population.
- Migrant Farm Workers’ Program, which provides clothing, toiletries, and other items needed by the workers.
- Starts with U, a program for recently released prisoners which prepares them for and helps them find employment in hopes of preventing their return to prison.
